East Coast Greenway Alliance leads development of the 3,000-mile East Coast Greenway from Maine to Florida, connecting 450 communities and hosting 50 million annual visits.

East Coast Greenway Alliance
REI Cooperative Action Fund support helps East Coast Greenway Alliance expand access to safe, connected walking and biking routes across the 3,000-mile East Coast Greenway, linking communities from Maine to Florida. Funding advances efforts to make active transportation and outdoor access more available—especially in under-invested communities where safe routes have historically been limited.
Through this partnership, the Alliance works alongside local partners and communities to move trail projects from planning to construction, strengthen grassroots advocacy, and ensure inclusive design—supporting pathways that make it easier for people to walk, bike, and connect with the outdoors in their daily lives.

2025 East Coast Greenway designations

In 2025, the East Coast Greenway Alliance approved more than 15 miles of traffic-free trail segments as official additions to the developing Maine-to-Florida bicycle and pedestrian route.

The full list from north to south includes:

  • New Hampshire Seacoast Greenway – Phase 1A, NH
  • Borthwick Avenue Sidepath, NH
  • William Felton “Bill” Russell Bridge, MA
  • Farmington Canal Heritage Trail – Phase IV, CT
  • Beach Street Trail, CT
  • Christian to Crescent Trail Connector, PA
  • WB&A Trail Patuxent River Bridge, MD
  • Metropolitan Branch Trail – Brookland to Fort Totten, DC
  • North Litchfield Safety Connector, SC
  • Waverly Road School Safety Connector, SC

Currently, the East Coast Greenway features more than 1,100 traffic-free miles connected by the interim route on roadways. Whenever possible, the interim route is located on low-traffic roadways; however, high-stress segments do exist. More than 65% of the Maine-to-Florida route is complete or in an advanced stage of development. More details on each 2025 designation are available below.
