Wild Diversity

Wild Diversity supports the development of a personal connection to the outdoors for Black, Indigenous, People of Color and the LGBTQ+ communities through outdoor adventures and education. We build unshakeable foundations of support and safety while creating a welcoming space for individuals within these communities to have access to environmental stewardship, learn about conservation and connect with wild spaces.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the healing that nature offers, but historical systems in our society have enforced barriers to those opportunities. Wild Diversity increases the number of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ Portland-metro area youth and adults who see the outdoors as a place for them. We build community through outdoor adventures, such as day and weekend trips and workshops. We also provide resources through outdoor skills workshops, our gear library and community partnerships. As we look to change the systems we live in, we decolonize outdoor spaces through diverse leadership development training and centering our communities needs above all else. And as we look to the future, we equip the next generation by creating equitable access to outdoor adventures and education for youth of color, and queer, trans and low-income youth.

Our Leadership Development Training and Conservation and Stewardship programs provide opportunities for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ folks to develop advanced outdoor skills through access, training and community connection. Our workshops, adult adventures and swimming program build confidence and competence in our participants by providing guidance and welcoming spaces in the outdoors. Our Youth Ecology program builds youths’ vision of who they can be and what they can accomplish in the outdoors. These programs support community resilience, reinforcing and enhancing our ability to better support ourselves during economic and environmental challenges and crises.
